The AEGON Winter County Cup 2010 (26th – 28th November) this year was held at the University of Bath Tennis Centre for the ladies and South Ribble Tennis & Fitness Centre, Preston for the men.
The men’s team captained by Gary Naughton consisted of Jack Busby, Dan Evans, Andrew Fitzpatrick, Sundeep Ubhi, Oliver Plaskett, Tom Hill, Neil Goldsby and Steve Lee. In the men’s group Warwickshire would have to face tough opponents in the shape of the West of Scotland, Cambridgeshire and Buckinghamshire. The men’s results were as follows:
Day 1: West of Scotland 5 – 4 Warwickshire
Day 2: Warwickshire 7 – 2 Cambridgeshire
Day 3: Warwickshire 7 – 0 Buckinghamshire
A top performance from the men’s team finishing second in the group with special mentions to Dan Evans, Andrew Fitzpatrick and Steve Lee who won all of their singles ties throughout the whole tournament.
Katie Shaw (Captain), Natasha Hillyer, Leyla Ogan, Amiee Jarrett, Luisa Cowper, Hannah Moran, Marianne Lancaster and Lottie Fox all made up the Warwickshire ladies team. The ladies who were in the top group had extremely tough opposition in Essex, Hertfordshire and Yorkshire. The ladies results were as follows:
Day 1: Warwickshire 5 – 4 Essex
Day 2: Warwickshire 3 – 6 Hertfordshire
Day 3: Yorkshire 5 – 2 Warwickshire
A special mention for Luisa Cowper who was victorious in all her singles matches.
Once all the dust had settled after 3 tough ties the Warwickshire ladies finished in a commendable 3rd place in the group in spite of this the result unfortunately saw them relegated. However, I’m sure Katie and the other ladies will be keen to bounce straight back come the AEGON Winter County Cup 2011!
