The U12 girl’s county cup team of Lucy Linnell, Kate Malazonia, Lucy Porter, Caitlin Knights and Evelyn Biggs won their regional stage and qualified through to the National finals held in Bolton July 10th & 11th 2010.
On the first day we were drawn against the number 2 seeds West of Scotland. This was a tough 1st round match but the girls fought hard in all matches. Lucy Linnell was unlucky to lose to the number one having played some good tennis, Kate Malazonia came in at number 2 and won a close match to take us to 1-1 in the match. Up next was Lucy Porter who kept a calm head to win her singles and give us a 2-1 lead going into the doubles. Lucy Linnell and Lucy Porter started slowly in the doubles losing the 1st set, but did fantastic to fight back to win the second set in a tiebreak and then go on to win the 3rd set tiebreak to take Warwickshire in the semi-finals.
The semi-final being played on the same day was against a solid Devon side. Even though all players put up a good fight the Devon team proved to tough to beat and Warwickshire lost all singles matches. However our doubles team of Kate Malazonia and Evelyn Biggs overcame the Devon doubles team to get a point on the board for Warwickshire. Overall we lost 3-1 to Devon resulting in Warwickshire now going into the 3rd and 4th playoff the next day.
Day 2 – 3rd and 4th Playoff Warwickshire vs Lancashire
Warwickshire were drawn surprisingly against a very strong Lancashire team who were seeded 1 in the tournament having lost to Kent in the semi-final. Our girls once again played some really great tennis but Lancashire proved too strong and won all singles and the doubles match, resulting in Warwickshire placing 4th overall in the tournament.
Congratulations to all the team for coming 4th, this was a great achievement considering the high level of all the counties competing over the weekend.
