The final round of the championships was upon us (Sunday 28th March 2010) with Warwickshire in a great position only half a point off 1st place. Unfortunately, due to player injuries and a Grade 2 taking place in Nottingham many of the top Warwickshire players were unavailable. However, this gave the chance for some of Warwickshire’s lower ranked players the chance to shine and make a name for themselves on the county stage. The boy’s team consisted of Ben Lane, Sam Jenkins, Luke Markham and Andrew Cooper with the girl’s team consisting of Hannah Porter, Maria Pandya, Charlotte Gorst and Emily Smith.
16U Boys Results:
Hertfordshire 2 – 2 Warwickshire
Cambridge 2 – 2 Warwickshire
Yorkshire 4 – 0 Warwickshire
16U Girls Results:
Hertfordshire 0 – 4 Warwickshire
Cambridge 2 – 2 Warwickshire
Yorkshire 3 – 1 Warwickshire
A solid display from the girls team finishing 2nd on the day with particularly good performances from Charlotte Gorst and Emily Smith and the team gaining 2.5 points for the Warwickshire cause. Unfortunately even though their effort and team spirit could not be faulted the boys struggled finishing the day in 4th gaining 1 point for Warwickshire.
Once the points from the 16U event had been added to the league table, it was announced that for the second year running Warwickshire had finished runners-up with a respectable 26.5 points. Yorkshire retained their title and will be back to defend it next year with Hertfordshire unfortunately being relegated and replaced with Leicestershire who won Group 2A. We look forward to the 2010/2011 Championships, which will be starting late this year and will again be looking to push on from this years 2nd place.
