Henley-in-Arden Tennis Club Championship took place last Sunday against some pretty tough competition from the local Olympic Torch procession and the Euro Cup final.
The weather proved kind for this annual family event allowing a packed programme of junior and adult competitions. Free games were available to residents from Henley and Wootton Wawen to encourage new members. The club is currently promoting ‘cardio tennis’ as part of a fitness regime together with social and competitive matches and coaching for children and adults.
The junior winners and finalists were:
Eight and under - James Price (Claverdon) (r/u Leo Bartlett)
Nine and under - Alex Didlick (Wootton Wawen) (r/u Millie Fenwick)
Twelve and under - Fraser Kent (Henley) (r/u Max Beishon)
Sixteen and under - Emma Hancocks (Bearley) (r/u Hannah Raper)
The senior winners and finalists were:
Ladies singles - Karen Foort (Redditch) (r/u Jane Palmer)
Men’s singles - Max Retallack (Henley) (r/u Rob West)
Ladies doubles - Dawn Grennall (Henley) & Sarah Rowan (Wootton Wawen)
Men’s doubles - Neil Supperstone (Henley) & Phil Bishop (Henley)
Mixed doubles - Rob West (Wootton Wawen) & Molly Eyre (Henley)
The event was sponsored Hemming and Peace funeral services. Their representative, Nigel Peace and club chairman, Simon Maddox presented winner’s cups and prizes. The Judy Wilde Junior Award Trophy was won by Grace Turner for her on-court decorum and club contributions and Harriet Holmes was awarded the most improved junior player.
