Warwick Boat Club Over 60's team ,was represented by Jenny Waggott, Jackie Robinson, Susie Rowe and Anna Potts (the same team that won the title in 2012). The team qualified for the event by reaching the final of the 2012 British Inter Club event where they lost to the 45 Club.
There were 6 teams entered for the European Championships and it was decided to play a round robin style event.
The first two matches were against 2TC Shot from Holland and CT Barcino in Madrid. In both cases Jenny and Jackie won their singles and Susie and Anna lost the doubles. On the wednesday against the R C Polo Club Barcelona Jackie won, with much use of the drop shot, and Jenny played brilliantly to defeat their number one player who had huge top spin on both wings. Jackie then teamed up with Susie to win the doubles.
We then played The Royal Leopold Club from Brussells. Jackie managed to win after a 3 hour battle 8-6 in the 3rd set tie break having been 5-2 and match point down, Jen than demolished their number one. Susie and Anna played a great doubles just losing in the 3rd set tie break.
So to the final against our old adversaries the 45 Club. Jackie was first up against Frances Taylor (GB Number one in the 70's team that won the recent World Championships)and lost 6-3 in the 3rd, Jenny (GB Number 2 player in the victorious World Championships team) then played Rosemary Wilson whom she had lost to last time, and won convincingly. In the doubles Frances teamed up with Phyllis Bentham, and after a close battle Jenny and Jackie won 10-5 in the 3rd set tie break.
A great end to a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable week. Having the WBC 70's men’s team to support us in the final rounds was also much appreciated.
