First Touchtennis Tour event for Coventry

Coventry Sports Foundation hosted the first ever Coventry touchtennis Tour Event at the Xcel Centre in Coventry on Sunday 16th November when the WAY2PLAY 300 series came to the city.

The event attracted players from all over the country from; Durham to Seaford, to battle it out with the sponge in the penultimate rankings event before the end of season Masters.

Touchtennis can be played by all on Badminton sized courts using smaller tennis rackets and sponge balls and anyone can book a court, lower the badminton net and borrow rackets from leisure centres across the city. Just ask at any centre in the city and they will provide you with the rules which are simple.

The event was a huge success with some hard fought matches all the way through, local boy James Asbridge, Head Coach at Nuneaton Tennis Club, lost a close match in the first set eventually going down in the decided set. Unsurprisingly former world no 1 and current # 3, Simon Roberts, routinely made his way to the final where he faced Ben Minski who triumphed in a semi-final battle against world # 7 Alex Oldfield, both players hailing from Leicester. This was a great achievement for Minski, who is ranked one place below Oldfield in the World rankings, but it appeared to take a monumental effort as he was destroyed 4-2 4-2 by Roberts in the final. The players now head to the unofficial home of touchtennis, Southend, for the final event before the end of season Masters Event at The National Tennis Centre on Sunday 16th December 2014.
