Hussain and Mitchell win Gosling Development Series

Mehboob Hussain and Darren Mitchell won the main draw singles and B Division singles at the latest Wheelchair Tennis Development Series event at Gosling Tennis Centre, Welwyn Garden City, while Andrea Weston and Ashley Davis won the women's singles and quad singles play-offs.

Local Hertfordshire player Martyn Baker and Hampshire’s Steve Crompton, a former winner of the Development Series points accumulator, both opened their campaigns with 6-4, 6-2 victories to reach the main draw singles semi-finals as Hussain and Geoff Ellis also recorded straight sets wins.

Hussain subsequently dominated his last four contest to defeat Baker 6-0 6-0. Crompton had a somewhat tougher time, but wrapped up a second set tie-break to advance to the final 6-2, 7-6(7).   Crompton then provided Hussain with his sternest test of the tournament, but the Birmingham player was more than equal to the task and took the title 6-4, 7-6(3).

After contesting the main draw consolation singles final Nick Smelt and Marc Francis paired up to reach the main draw doubles final after beating Hussain and Manoojkanth Somasandatrum 5-3, 4-2. But Crompton and Ellis moved into the final without dropping a game and went on to take the doubles title 5-4(5), 4-2.

The tournament’s two women’s entrants and two quad division entrants all contested the B Division singles in a four-way round-robin. Mitchell took the honours after the Reading player and Cardiff’s Davis both beat Tracey Proudlock and Andrea Weston. The deciding contest between Mitchell and Davis provided a much closer encounter, with Mitchell eventually edging two tie-breaks to prevail 5-4(6), 5-4(6).

However, it was a different result when Davis and Mitchell went head-to-head in the one-off quad singles play-off, with Davis dominating a third and deciding set to win 5-3, 3-5, 4-0.

After beating Proudlock 4-1, 4-0 in their round-robin contest in the B Division singles, Weston also won their women’s singles play-off, earning a second straight sets win 4-0, 4-2.
