Alfie Hewett, Gordon Reid and Lucy Shuker completed the first tournament of the year for Britain’s wheelchair tennis player with victories in the men’s and women’s doubles at the Queensland Open as Shuker also finished runner-up in the women’s singles and Jamie Burdekin finished runner-up in the quad singles.  

Hewett and Reid justified top seeding in the men’s doubles to win their final against Australia’s Ben Weekes and Brazil’s Daniel Rodrigues 6-3, 6-3.

Shuker and South Africa’s Kgothatso Montjane also lived up to their top seeding in the women’s doubles, winning their decisive final round-robin match against Charlotte Famin and Katharina Kruger 6-3, 6-1.

Earlier in the day third seed Shuker had finished runner-up to second seed Montjane in the women’s singles after Montjane won the final 7-6(4), 6-2.

With British players sharing in all three doubles titles in Brisbane after Antony Cotterill’s victory in the quad doubles partnering Dylan Alcott of Australia, Burdekin made a fine start in his bid to add the quad singles title to the British success, but world No. 2 Alcott fought back to win their decisive contest  0-6, 6-2, 6-0. Meanwhile, Cotterill ended his tournament on a winning note after taking the third place play-off against Japan’s Shota Kawano 6-3, 7-5.

Lucy Shuker moved into the women’s singles final as Antony Cotterill partnered Australia’s Dylan Alcott to claim the quad doubles title in Brisbane. Shuker, Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid ate also all in the doubles finals on Saturday.

Third seed Shuker beat German top seed and world No. 8 Katharina Kruger 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 in her women’s singles semi-final and goes on to play he doubles partner, South Africa’s Kgothatso Montjane,  in the final. Shuker and Montjane eased to a  6-1, 6-3 win over Moho Nijo of Japan and Paulina Shakirova of Russia in their third round-robin women’s doubles match. The top seeds play Charlotte Famin of France and Kruger in the title decider.

With Brits on both sides of the net in the quad doubles decider, Cotterill and Alcott beat Jamie Burdekin and Japan’s Shota Kawano 7-6(3), 6-1. Burdekin will now meet Alcott in the deciding quad singles round-robin contest.

Top seeds Hewett and Reid will also play Brazilian Daniel Rodrigues and Australian Ben Weekes in the men’s doubles final after being awarded a walkover in their scheduled semi-final against Australian duo Adam Kellerman and Keegan Oh-Chee.

Jamie Burdekin ensured his place in the title decider for the quad singles on the second day in Brisbane, while Lucy Shuker made a winning start to 2015 to reach the women’s singles semi-finals. Gordon Reid and Alfie Hewett also reached into the men’s doubles semi-finals, while Shuker and South Africa’s Kgothatso Montjane remained unbeaten in the women’s doubles.

Burdekin made it two wins from two round-robin matches when he defeated Shota Kawano of Japan 6-2, 6-4. Burdekin now meets world No. 2 Dylan Alcott in the decisive match in the quad singles after Alcott also remained unbeaten following his 6-2, 6-2 win over Antony Cotterill. Burdekin and Kawano will play Cotterill and Alcott on Friday in the quad doubles decider.

British No. 2 Shuker eased through her opening match of the season, earning a women’s singles semi-final against German top seed Katharina Kruger after beating Japan’s Miho Nijo 6-1, 6-1. Meanwhile, Shuker and Montjane beat Australia’s Janel Manns and Natalia Mayara of Brazil with their second 6-2, 6-2 doubles victory in successive days in the women’s doubles.

With British men’s No. 1 Gordon Reid only playing doubles in Brisbane, he partnered Alfie Hewett to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Australian duo Henry de Cure and Jerry Markoja as the British top seeds powered towards a men’s doubles semi-final against a second Australian partnership, Adam Kellerman and Keegan Oh-Chee.

Hewett put up an admirable performance against Japanese top seed Takashi Sanada in their men’s doubles quarter-final and took the second set off the world No. 8 before Sanada eventually prevailed 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.

Alfie Hewett made a fantastic start to his first ever tournament in Australia as the British No. 4 and world No. 1 junior edged out Japan’s former world No. 3 Satoshi Saida to reach the men’s singles quarter-finals, with Jamie Burdekin also making a winning start to the quad singles round-robin.

Seventeen year-old Hewett defeated Saida 7-6(4), 7-6(3) and now meets top seed Takashi Sanada of Japan for a place in the semi-finals of the men’s singles.

Meanwhile, world No. 5 Burdekin beat fellow Brit Antony Cotteril 6-3, 7-5 in the first of three round-robin matches for both players, who  now go on to meet Australia’s world No. 2 Dylan Alcott and Japan’s Shota Kawano in the coming days.

Lucy Shuker is third seed for the women’s singles and has a bye into the last eight ahead of playing Miho Nijo of Japan. Hewett and Gordon Reid are top seeds for the men’s doubles, while Shuker and South Africa’s Kgothatso Montjane pair up in a five-way round-robin competition for the women’s doubles, starting their campaign with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Australian duo Sarah Calati and Luba Josevski.

Cotterill partners Alcott for the quad doubles, with Burdekin pairing up with Kawano, guaranteeing that a Brit will be in the winning partnership.

British players won a total of 80 international wheelchair tennis titles in 2014 and Gordon Reid, Alfie Hewett, Lucy Shuker, Antony Cotterill and Jamie Burdekin bid to start 2015 in style when the Queensland Wheelchair Tennis Open takes place alongside the Brisbane International ATP and WTA Tour event.

Hewett, the world No. 1 rankled junior, and Reid fly the flag for Britain in the men's events, with Hewett carrying British hopes in the men's singles. While Reid is building up to the defence of his singles and doubles titles at the Sydney International Open, Shuker was also a doubles champion in Sydney in 2014 and the British No. 2 completes her preparations for the first Super Series tournament of the year in Brisbane. She will aim to start 2015 in the same title-winning form with which she finished 2014, ending last season by winning the Prague Cup Czech Indoor.

Burdekin and Cotterill are among the world top 10 ranked players contesting the quad singles and doubles.
