Cheshire Success at 2016 British Indoor Senior Championships

Monday, February 08, 2016

Cheshire players experienced varying degrees of success at this key event in the Seniors tennis calendar. It was again hosted  by the David Lloyd Centre, Dudley.

Seb Jackson had a trouble free route through to the 45's + singles semifinals before losing to an inspired opponent in two very close sets. John Hilton also had a similar experience winning three matches, but on reaching the 65's + singles semi final lost to the no.1 seed. The good news is that both Seb and John put this disappointment quickly behind them in their respective doubles events, reaching the final in their age groups, and then recording fine wins to claim GB titles.

Another notable success was Jeff Fairbotham in the 60's + age group. Jeff was unseeded, yet proceeded to knock out seeded opponents in his first two matches before just losing in the quarter finals to the no. 4 seed 7 - 5 in the final set. Jeff also went onto to reach the semi finals of the doubles before losing to the top seeds and eventual winners.

In the ladies 80 + event Alma A'Court recorded two convincing wins which took her to the final, however, unfortunately a leg injury prevented her from playing in it. Despite this disappointment it was still a great effort.

It is also pleasing to report on many more Cheshire players testing themselves at the highest level, and the following players all gave a good account of themselves despite suffering defeat in their first matches: Phil Spencer (35+), James Stokes (55+), Tim Kingston (65 +), Peter Ellison & Stuart Gould (80 +), Sue Winters (60+) and Barbara Bloor (65+).

If these successes have inspired you, don’t forget to enter the Cheshire Senior & Super Senior County Championships 2016 that take place between 12th and 20th March CHE15W6100 here
