New Faces – Old Injuries!

The Men’s Over 35 County Championships took place this year over the weekend of 8-10 August at Eastbourne.

Notts were once again in Division 4 up against Avon, Cornwall and Derbyshire.

The team took on a different view this year with the much needed younger support of Jamie Drummond and Richard Stamp, unfortunately with just two days to go before the event we lost the services of Todd Johnsen and Ross Savage due to injuries so after many telephone calls a new looking team sheet appeared on a sunny day one against Oxfordshire.

Playing on the number one show court at Eastbourne is always a great experience – rumour has it that this is the old hallowed turf relayed from the Wimbledon number one show court before it was rebuilt a number of years ago - so we needed a team performance to go with it! Notts came through on the top with a great 3-2 team win against a strong side.

Day two and Notts are up against local rivals Derbyshire, the match started well and we quickly had the first singles win under our belt but unfortunately we lost a very close second singles to level the match. With the three remaining doubles matches still to be played we needed two wins to get the result. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be and we went down a very close 2-3.

After two days of sunshine, day three took on a the view of a typical British seaside town – wet and windy. No play was possible on the grass courts so Notts ended up runner up in the group and will be back next year fighting fit I’m sure even stronger.

Next year the dates for Eastbourne are 28-30 August so put in in your diary and come along and support – it’s a great weekend of tennis in a fantastic setting.

Tim Phillips - Captain

Thanks to the team of Jamie Drummond, Pete Godber, Tim Phillips, Jason Revill and Richard Stamp.
