Corby Orange Festival of Tennis - Saturday Feb 2nd 2019

Wednesday, February 06, 2019

The team was Evan Lam, Joe Bowie, Jacob Cameron, Isabella Smillie.

In the morning stage Notts were drawn against Essex, Hertfordshire, and Yorkshire.

Round 1-Essex-Lost 3-1

Evan had a difficult first match up against a strong player from Essex and lost 7-5, 7-1. Joe was very unfortunate not to win at least a set in his opening match losing in a tight 7-5, 7-6 contest but played well throughout. Jacob as number 3 had a fall after only a few points and after losing the first set fought back to level at 1 set all but unfortunately lost the decider 7-3. Isabella was very comfortable in a 7-3, 7-4 win and played solid tennis.

Round 2-Hertfordshire-Lost 4-0

Evan was again up against a very strong player within this match with a huge serve but battled really well to win a set and showed great resilience. Joe found his 2nd match tough but worked hard throughout and never gave up. Both Jacob and Isabella fought hard too but lost in straight sets. Hertfordshire went on to win the event and had a very strong team.

Round 3-Yorkshire- Drew 2-2 (Won by sets)

Evan had a close 3 set match winning the first and playing some great tennis before losing the final set on the sudden death point at 6-6. Joe was up against a player who just never missed, every ball came back but he also played with power and accuracy when there was an opportunity. Jacob won in 3 sets playing some solid tennis and looked comfortable throughout the match. Isabella outclassed her opponent winning 7-2, 7-0 and hitting some good attacking shots through the match.

Following the results in the morning Notts finished 3rd and so missed out on playing for 1-4th place. We now went into the afternoon session to compete for 5th-8th.

Buckinghamshire- Drew 2-2 (Won by sets)

In this round Joe got a great win claiming a 7-4, 7-6 victory which he was very happy about. Played with good consistency throughout. Isabella again won comfortably 7-2, 7-3 and played some great winning shots. Jacob lost in 3 sets but winning that 1 set was to help decide the match. Evan again fought well and played some lovely shots throughout his match.

Following this win we were playing against Yorkshire again- Again finished 2-2 but this time we lost on sets.

Evan and Joe both lost this match in 2 sets with both of their opponents really playing well throughout and giving very little opportunity to either player to attack. Jacob won in 2 sets and looked confident with the win. Isabella won the first set 7-0 and the opponent then mixed things up and started getting to the net much more to win the second set 7-6, Isabella then played the best she had throughout the event hitting some great attacking backhands to win the decider 7-1.

We finished 6th overall and all the players had a great day and it was such a great experience for them. They loved being in a team and they were all smiles at the end and got on with each other very well.
