Mens Over 60’s matches

v Avon

The Men’s over 60 county team won their third consecutive county match in division 1A. The team were playing indoors at West Bridgford Tennis Club against Avon on the same day as the Men’s Wimbledon Final. No wonder the spectator count was down. The Notts number one singles player was away playing tennis in Germany, which meant the usual team had to be reshuffled, bringing in John Kingston from the over 65 team.

John Taylor played at number one and comfortably beat Richard Shears 6-1, 6-2. Gerry Radford came in to play at number 2, and after a number of frights came through against Garry Jones 6-4, 6-4. John Kingston then partnered the captain David Carter, who battled for two hours to beat Stewart Lloyd and Peter Etheridge 7-6, 6-4, which gave us a wining 3-0 lead after the first round.

In the second round Nick Shelvey replaced the injured captain, to partner John Kingston who went down to Richard Shears and Garry Jones 3-6, 4-6. John Taylor and Gerry Radford came through in the final match to beat Stewart Lloyd and Peter Etheridge 6-4, 6-2, for a final match winning 4-1 score.

 v Cheshire

The men’s over 60 County team travelled to Cheshire for their second match of the season for a potentially tricky encounter. In the first round Eddie Fox played a Great Britain player, John Hilton, and although there were some good rallies Eddie went down 6-4. 6-1. John Taylor who is playing better than ever this season beat Rod Boswell 6-2, 6-3, and Gerry Radford and David Carter made it 2-1 after the first round with a 6-3, 6-3, win against Steve Pearson and Bob Martin.

In the second round Gerry and David were a set and 4-2 up against John Hilton and Rod Boswell but eventually lost 6-4, 4-6, 10-5, making the match score 2-2. Eddie and John came through their doubles with a comfortable 6-1, 6-2 win to give us an overall 3-2 win.

v Hertfordshire

The men’s over 60 county team started the defence of their division 1 title, with a convincing win against Hertfordshire at the weekend, on the indoor courts at West Bridgford Tennis Club. Playing at number one singles Eddie Fox beat Peter Leary 6 -3, 6-4, after coming back from 4 – I down in the second set. John Taylor at number two, beat Malcolm Fraser 6 – 1, 6 – 1, with Gerry Radford and David Carter beating Peter Cartmell and David Thomas 6 -0, 6 -0, to complete the first round. In the second round John Taylor and Eddie Fox beat Peter Cartmell and David Thomas 6 – 2, 6 – 1, and Gerry Radford and David Carter completed the whitewash by beating Peter Leary and Malcolm Fraser 6 -1, 6 -3.
