Community Tennis Pilot - Swansea

Share

Swansea Tennis Centre is at the heart of tennis development and community engagement in the city. From being closed down by the local authority in 2010, the social enterprise that now operates the facility boasts yearly profits and is one of the top performing centres in the country with the numbers on programmes and a very high court occupancy.  The centre also does extensive outreach work, running organised, informal activity on many of the city’s park sites.

Gower College has made a significant impact on the growth of tennis, both within the college and in the wider communities of Swansea. Proactive partnerships between the college, LTA, Tennis Foundation and local tennis venues have facilitated the development of a successful college tennis programme, focusing on leadership and increasing student participation.

The partnership has provided students with opportunities to participate in new and alternative forms of tennis, which have proved popular and engaged many students who otherwise would not take part in tennis. Over the past 18 months, the College has developed a workforce of Tennis Leaders, introduced a Tennis Ambassador and provided curriculum, enrichment and competitive tennis opportunities.
