Burdekin and Norfolk into Florida Open quarter-finals

Jamie Burdekin and Peter Norfolk will both contest Friday's quad singles quarter-finals at the Florida Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships after a fine show by Britain's quad players on the second day of action in Boca Raton.

Burdekin faces world No 4 Nick Taylor in the last eight at the first Super Series event of the 2011 NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour after comfortably beating another American opponent, Francois Trawalter, 6-0, 6-2.

Meanwhile, Taylor was given a huge scare in Thursday's second round by Britain's John Parfitt.  World No 16 Parfitt took the first set of his match against Taylor 6-0 and held a 3-1 lead in the third and deciding set before the American's greater experience finally saw him through to a 0-6, 7-5, 7-6(4) victory.

With all three Britons in the second round of the quad singles facing American opponents, after a first round bye World No 2 Norfolk opened his bid for a sixth Florida Open title in fine style.  Norfolk, who is looking for back-to-back titles after winning last week's Pensacola Open, beat Greg Hasterok 6-1, 6-0 and will now play eighth seed Lucas Sithole of South Africa.

Norfolk and Parfitt will also begin their quad doubles challenge on Friday when they face Canadian duo Adrian Dieleman and Gary Luker.

Elsewhere, there was disappointment for British No 2 Jordanne Whiley in the last 16 of the women's singles after she was edged out by South Africa's Kgothatso Montjane 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(4).

However, Whiley and Montjane later joined forces to reach the quarter-finals of the women's doubles after defeating Canada's Yuka Chokyu and Miho Nijo of Japan 6-4, 6-3.  Whiley and Montjane now face the third seeds, Marjolein Buis of the Netherlands and Belgium's Annick Sevenans.

Meanwhile, British men's No 1 David Phillipson and Frenchman Frederic Cazeaudumec saw their men's doubles campaign come to an end on Thursday.  Phillipson and Cazeaudumec had reached the quarter-finals with few problems, but succumbed 6-0, 6-1 to Dutch top seeds Maikel Scheffers and Ronald Vink.
