Burdekin and Norfolk reach Florida Open semis

British players claimed victories in five of the six matches they were involved in during Friday's third day of the Florida Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships in Boca Raton, with Jamie Burdekin and Peter Norfolk both progressing to the quad singles semi-finals.

Meanwhile, British women's No 2 Jordanne Whiley also reached the women's doubles semi-finals.

Burdekin boosted his chances of returning to the world's top 10 sooner rather than later after beating American world No 4 Nick Taylor in straight sets in his quad singles quarter-final. World ranked No 13 this week, Burdekin beat Taylor 7-5, 6-3 to earn his best result since returning to the sport last July after an injury lay off.

Seventh seed Burdekin now faces a semi-final against Noam Gershony, the Israeli player who beat world No 1 David Wagner of the United States earlier this week.

World No 2 Norfolk maintained his bid for a sixth Florida Open title after facing a strong challenge from South African eighth seed Lucas Sithole. Norfolk won the points that mattered to beat Sithole 6-2, 6-3 and plays Swedish fifth seed Anders Hard in his semi-final.

Later in the day Norfolk also reached the quad doubles semi-finals alongside fellow Briton John Parfitt. The second seeds defeated Canadians Adrian Dieleman and Gary Luker 6-0, 6-0 and will now play the third seeded pairing of American Bryan Barten and Hard.

Barten and Hard thwarted any chance of having three Britons in the same quad doubles semi-final, coming from a set down to beat Antony Cotteill and Sithole 2-6, 7-5, 12-10 after a deciding championship tie-break.

However, there was better news for Cotterill as he reached the quad consolation singles final. Cotterill beat American Kevin Whalen 6-1, 6-1 in his semi-final and now faces Japan's Takahiro Koga in the decider.

After exiting the women's singles on Thursday at the hands of South Africa's Kgothatso Montjane, Whiley had a much better time on Friday as she partnered Montjane to reach the women's doubles semi-finals.

The unseeded pairing of Whiley and Montjane produced a polished performance to upset third seeds Marjolein Buis of the Netherlands and Belgium's Annick Sevenans 6-3, 6-0. They now face a stiffer challenge as they take on Dutch top seeds and reigning Wimbledon and US Open doubles champions Esther Vergeer and Sharon Walraven.
