GB juniors and women bid for final spots

Great Britain's junior and women's wheelchair tennis teams both resume their bids to reach the finals of their respective events at the ITF World Team Cup in Pretoria, South Africa on Friday.

Meanwhile, Great Britain's quad and men's teams will complete their events with play-offs for third and seventh places against teams from Canada and Austria respectively.

The Great Britain junior team start a busy day by contesting the deciding doubles rubber of their semi-final against top seeds and defending champions the Netherlands.

Both nations won one of the two singles rubbers as the semi-final got underway on Thursday, with Dermot Bailey producing a stellar effort to ensure Great Britain stayed in the hunt for a place in the final when he won the second singles rubber against Dutchman Rody de Bie 7-5, 7-5,

Earlier in the day 13-year-old Alfie Hewett lost the first of the three singles matches he has played this week when he slipped to a 2-6, 4-6 defeat against Jeroen Staman.

With Great Britain's women having already booked a place in their semi-final against second seeds Germany on Friday, all three ties that Great Britain teams were involved in on the fourth day of play went to deciding doubles rubber.

The quad team missed out on a place in the final after a 2-1 loss to last year's runners-up Israel.  All three rubbers in the semi-final were extremely closely contest with Israel's Noam Gershony winning the crucial points as he beat Jamie Burdekin 6-4, 6-4.

Peter Norfolk kept Britain's hopes alive when the world No 2 edged former world No 1 Shraga Weinberg 6-4, 7-5, but Antony Cotterill and Norfolk were unable to hold off Gershony and Boaz Kramer, who sealed the tie for Israel 7-5, 6-3.  Burdekin, Cotterill and Norfolk now face Canada on Friday in a bid to secure third place.

There was an even closer finish to Great Britain's men's World Group 1 tie against Poland after British No 1 Gordon Reid dominated Piotr Jaroszewski for a 6-0, 6-0 win in the second singles rubber.  David Philipson turned in a fine effort against former world No 5 Tadeusz Kruszelnicki before finally succumbing 6-3, 2-6, 5-7 in the opening match and after Reid had forced the doubles, he and Marc McCarroll took the opening set.

However, former World Team Cup finalists Jaroszewski and Kruszelnicki finally prevailed 3-6, 6-3, 10-5 after a championship tie-break.  Great Britain play fifth seeds Austria on Friday in an attempt to end their event on a winning note and claim seventh place.
