Peter Norfolk won his first NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour singles title of 2011 on Sunday after a straight sets win over American world No 1 David Wagner in the quad singles final at the Pensacola Open.
After falling at least one break behind in the second set of all three of his previous contests this week in Pensacola, including dropping a set to fellow Briton Andrew Lapthorne in his opening match, world No 2 Norfolk found himself just one game down at the start of the second set of the final.
However, he kept pace with Wagner before securing his own vital breaks of serve to wrap up a 6-1, 6-3 victory, earning his 32nd win over the American in their 49 contests to date on the NEC Tour.
"I played a solid, aggressive game today and served well to keep the pressure on and win the important points," said a jubilant Norfolk, who was runner-up to Wagner in January's Australian Open, his only other previous start this season.
With the latest ITF 1 Series event on the tour now over, Norfolk joins a host of other top British players in heading to Boca Raton for the Florida Open, which starts on Wednesday. The first tournament of the year to have Super Series status, the Florida Open is one of the most important wheelchair tennis tournaments outside of the Grand Slams. Norfolk will bid for his sixth quad singles title in Boca Raton.
