Peter Norfolk won his sixth Florida Open quad singles title on Sunday in Boca Raton to bring his tally of major singles titles to 19 at either Grand Slam or Super Series events on the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour.
World No 2 Norfolk secured a 6-2, 6-3 victory over unseeded Israeli player Noam Gershony in Sunday's final After a solid opening set Norfolk made the first breakthrough in the second set, holding serve to move 4-2 ahead before winning the last two games of the match to seal his sixth title in Boca Raton since 2004 and his first since 2009.
"It was a surprising week, playing players with some new and different styles," said Norfolk. "I played a solid tactical final against Noam, who was in his first Super Series final. My backhand returns were very penetrating today and I am very happy to have regained the title."
However, Norfolk's quest for a third Florida Open quad doubles title finally came unstuck in an Anglo-American decider against top seeds Nick Taylor and David Wagner.
In the full heat of the Florida sunshine Norfolk and fellow Briton John Parfitt had chances to break Wagner's serve late in the first set, but the Americans held and then broke Parfitt's serve in a marathon second game in the second set en route to wrapping up a 6-4, 6-1 victory.
Antony Cotterill added to the British success after claiming victory in the quad consolation singles final. Runner-up in the corresponding event at the Cajun Classic in Baton Rouge, Louisiana two weeks ago, Cotterill completed his series of three successive tournaments in the United States on a high after beating Japan's Takahiro Koga 6-3, 6-2.
