Parfitt progresses at Florida Open

All three British players in singles action during Wednesday's first day of the Florida Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships were involved in three set matches, with John Parfitt progressing to the second round of the quad singles.

Parfitt joins seeded Britons Peter Norfolk and Jamie Burdekin in Thursday's last 16 matches in the quad singles after fighting back to beat Japan's Takahiro Koga 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

While world No 16 Parfitt goes on to face American world No 4 Nick Taylor, the two players ranked directly below Parfitt, Britain's Antony Cotterill and Canada's Adrian Dieleman, also went to a deciding set.

However, after taking the second set against Dieleman without dropping a game, Cotterill eventually lost out 3-6, 6-0, 2-6.

After first round byes, five-time Florida Open champion and world No 2 Norfolk will begin his bid to regain the title against American Greg Hasterok, while seventh seed Burdekin faces another American opponent, Francois Trawalter.

In the men's singles, British No 1 David Phillipson came agonisingly close to beating former world No 1 Michael Jeremiasz for France, but after Phillipson held a 5-1 third set lead Jeremiasz fought back to prevail 3-6, 7-5, 7-5.

British No 2 Jordanne Whiley will be among the players in action at the first ITF Super Series event of the 2011 NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour on Thursday.  After a first round bye, seventh seed Whiley takes on South African Kgothatso Montjane in a bid to reach the quarter-finals.
