Winners decided at BUCS Barclays Tennis Individual Championships

Following the recent British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) Barclays Tennis Team Championships in Sheffield, the Individual Championships descended on Gosling International High Performance Centre over the weekend.

In the women’s singles Iva Saric won the title to continue the good form that saw her help Durham to victory in the Team Finals two weeks ago.

Saric defeated Steph Cornish of Bath University 6-2, 6-2 to secure the title after beating University of London player Becky Llewellyn in the semi-final. Cornish reached the final following a 6-3, 6-4 victory against defending champion Claire Ricketts of Brunel University.

In the women’s doubles London Met defeated last year’s winners Durham with Annabell Bann and Hannah Toro securing a 6-1, 6-4 win over Lucy Scott and Saric.

The men's and women's doubles finalists Meanwhile in the men’s singles Matjaz Jurman continued his dominance of the BUCS Barclays Tennis Championships, taking his fourth singles title since 2005/6.

The London Met player defeated Matt James (UWIC) 6-3, 6-1 in the semi-finals before overcoming Durham’s Richard Wire 6-1, 6-3 in the final.

Wire had earlier beaten Kyle Brassington (Leeds Met) 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the other semi-final. Like Saric, victory for Jurman in the singles comes after helping London Met to claim an impressive seventh BUCS title in the Team Championships.

Leeds Met pair Brassington and Elliot Chang came from behind to win 4-6, 6-1, 10-4 against Loughborough’s Scott Dickson & Jonathon Kinsella to win the doubles title.
