British players made a bright start to the Swiss Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships in Geneva on Tuesday, with Gordon Reid and David Phillipson advancing to the second round of the men's main draw singles after Reid defeated British No 4 Alex Jewitt in his opening match.
Jewitt will go on to contest the men's consolation singles after British No 1 Reid secured a 6-0, 6-3 victory in their first round match.
Eighth seed Reid will face Thomas von Daeniken in the second round after the Swiss player overcame former Great Britain international Tony Knappett 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
With next week's British Open in Nottingham the next stop on the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour for the world's leading players, British No 2 Phillipson, for whom the British Open is his local tournament, began his Swiss Open challenge with a solid 6-2, 7-6(8) victory over rising Japanese star Takashi Sanada.
Phillipson now takes on Dutch fourth seed and world No 6 Ronald Vink in a bid to reach the quarter-finals.
In the quad singles Britain's Jamie Burdekin and John Parfitt both defeated qualifiers in their first round matches.
Parfitt produced one of the most dominant performances on the opening day of the ITF 1 Series tournament as he swept past Frenchman David Alves Cerquiera 6-0, 6-0 to earn a quarter-final against Swedish second seed Anders Hard, a player that Parfitt defeated twice in 2010.
Burdekin overcame Sweden's Marcus Jonsson 6-2, 6-3 and will now play Italy's Antonio Raffaele in the last eight.
While Britain's top two women's players, Lucy Shuker and Jordanne Whiley, both had first round byes in the women's singles, they will be pair up on Wednesday, when all the British players begin their doubles campaigns.
