Jamie Burdekin booked his place in the quad singles semi-finals at the Swiss Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships on Thursday on what was another successful day for British players in Geneva.
Fourth seed and world No 9 Burdekin, a finalist in the ITF 1 Series tournament in 2009, defeated Italy’s Antonio Raffaele in the last eight in Geneva for the second time in three years, earning a 6-0, 6-3 victory this time to book a semi-final against American world No. 1 David Wagner.
John Parfitt narrowly missed out on becoming Britain’s second quad singles semi-finalist, despite taking a 4-1 first set lead against Swedish second seed Anders Hard. Parfitt eventually slipped to a 4-6, 4-6 loss.
There was better news in the women’s singles after Britain’s top two ranked players, fifth seed Lucy Shuker and eighth seed Jordanne Whiley, both won their opening matches to earn quarter-final places.
World No 8 Shuker takes on Dutch third seed Sharon Walraven in the last eight after defeating Thailand’s Ratana Techamaneewat 6-2, 6-2. Meanwhile, world No 12 Whiley edged out Japan’s Kanako Domori 6-4, 6-4 to set up a quarter-final against Belgian fourth seed Annick Sevenans.
British No 1 Gordon Reid takes British hopes into the men’s main draw singles quarter-finals after defeating Switzerland’s Thomas von Daeniken 6-0, 6-0. World No 13 Reid, who has dropped just three games en route to the last eight, will now play French world No 3 Stephane Houdet, who Reid took to three sets in last month’s French Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships.
However, David Phillipson’s quest to also reach the quarter-finals came to an end after the British No 2 lost out to Dutch world No 6 Ronald Vink 6-3, 6-0.
British interest in the men’s doubles also came to an end, although Reid and his Italian partner Fabian Mazzei put up a solid effort against recent Wimbledon champions Maikel Scheffers and Vink before the Dutch top seeds finally prevailed 6-3, 7-6(4).
Meanwhile, Phillipson and fellow Briton Alex Jewitt gained just one game against French second seeds Houdet and Nicolas Peifer.
Jewitt returns to singles action on Friday in the men’s main draw consolation singles, while Reid, Shuker and Whiley also bid to advance in their respective men’s and women’s singles quarter-finals and Shuker and Whiley play their women’s doubles semi-final against Dutch top seeds Marjolein Buis and Walraven.
With a host of Britain’s leading players competing in Geneva ahead of next week’s British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships in Nottingham, British women’s No 3 Louise Hunt is completing her British Open preparations at the Bavarian Open in Wendelstein, Germany.
Second seed Hunt moved into the women’s singles quarter-finals on Thursday after recovering from a slow start to defeat Austria’s Waltraud Posch 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Hunt plays Spain’s Elena Jacinto in the last eight.
