Players from Holcombe Brook Tennis Club showed off their skills this week to none other than AEGON GB Davis Cup Team players, Jamie Murray, Colin Fleming and Coach Louis Cayer, after the Lancashire club were treated to a master class.
The players from Holcombe Brook Tennis Club were selected for the exclusive master class because of their dedication and commitment in running 13 AEGON Team Tennis teams across six courts throughout the AEGON Team Tennis season.
Sue Lawson, coach at Holcombe Brook commented: “We had a great day with the players and Louis (Cayer). We really felt that British Tennis reached out to us and we were a part of something really special.
“It means a lot to me and the youngsters who are training and travelling around the country trying to increase their rating. It shows them that success is definitely attainable and inspires them to work hard at their tennis. It gave everyone here a real boost and we really enjoyed it. We wish them the best of luck this weekend.”
Murray, Fleming and Coach Cayer took the selected players through a variety of skills and drills designed to inspire the players and encourage them to stay involved in the sport.
Commenting on the master class, Murray said: “I’ve really enjoyed meeting the team and putting them through their paces in a tennis master class.
“Team competition has many benefits to clubs, players and coaches and is a great way to attract more people to the sport and encourage players to stay in the sport as they get older. Playing tennis in a team is fun, it helps build a good rapport among players and keeps the sport social.”
In the last year AEGON Team Tennis in Lancashire has increased from 82 teams to 102 teams who have entered the competition, an increase of 15 percent.
AEGON Team Tennis, organised by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and supported by the Tennis Foundation (TF), provides the opportunity for lower rated players to play competitive tennis in a team-based environment and sees clubs from all over the UK compete in regional leagues vying for team tennis honours.
