Peter Norfolk and David Phillipson maintain British hopes of main draw singles success after Wednesday's rain-delayed opening day at the Pensacola Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships in Florida.
Norfolk, currently the world No 2 ranked quad singles player, led fellow Briton and world No 6 Andrew Lapthorne 6-1, 2-6, 3-0 when Lapthorne had to retire after picking up an injury.
Two-time Paralympic champion and second seed Norfolk will now face Dutch world No 8 Dorrie Timmermans, who beat another of fhe five Britons in the quad singles draw, Jamie Burdekin, 6-0, 6-2.
Britain's John Parfitt also had the misfortune of being drawn against world top 10 ranked opposition in the first round and had nine set points in the first set against Canadian world No 5 Sarah Hunter before eventually slipping to a 6-7, 1-6 loss.
Meanwhile, Antony Cotterill, who was runner-up in the quad consolation singles at last week's Cajun Classic in Louisiana, will again take his chance at the corresponding event in Pensacola after a 3-6, 4-6 loss to American Greg Hasterok.
In the men's main draw singles, British No 1 Phillipson will play Japan's Masahiro Honma in the second round after easing through his opening match againt Canada's Corey Blatchford 6-0, 6-2.
After a first round bye, British No 2 and seventh seed Jordanne Whiley gets her women's singles challenge underway on Thursday against Chile's Maria Antonieta Ortiz, with Whiley aiming to reverse her early loss to Ortiz in last week's Cajun Classic.
