The European Collegiate Tennis Association Finals 2012 (ECTA) were held at the National Tennis Centre over the weekend and saw Loughborough crowned as the European Champions beating The German Sports University of Cologne in the final.
Team Captain and Head Coach at Loughborough University Tom Kisiel said: “I feel very proud to have captained Loughborough to European glory and was pleased with the team spirit they showed throughout the weekend.”
Held as an invitational event, ECTA brings together the best university teams from across Europe to compete against one another, to provide university players with the opportunity to play both in a team and in an individual environment across many different countries.
Co-Director of ECTA, Euan McGinn said: “It has been a fantastic weekend and great to see such team spirit amongst the teams competing. There is great potential to further develop the competitive structure across European universities and we look forward to working with a range of partners over the coming years to make this happen.”
Each day saw the eight university teams compete in a compass draw format with four winners going forward from day one, and four losers going back.
Alistair Highham Higher Education Manager for the Tennis Foundation commented: “We were delighted to host the ECTA European Finals at the National Tennis Centre and it was great to see teams from across Europe battle it out for the trophy and Loughborough emerge as the eventual winners. We have significantly increased our support for university tennis over the last year and hopefully this top level success will inspire more students to pick up a racket and play tennis.”
