Wheelchair tennis showcased at Davis Cup tie

Some of Great Britain's top wheelchair tennis players today showcased their skills at the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas tie at the Ricoh Arena between Great Britain and Russia.

Paralympians Marc McCarroll and David Phillipson were joined by world junior No.1 Alfie Hewett and Dermot Bailey in an exhibition match on the main show court.

McCarroll and Hewett won a mini tie-break match 11-9 before Great Britain's James Ward took to the court to take on Dmitry Tursunov from Russia to start an epic comeback from the British team.

"It's always really great to play in front of such a big crowd and it's the biggest I've seen since playing in front of sold out crowds at Eton Manor during the Paralympics last September," said British No.2 McCarroll, who reached the quarter-finals of the men's doubles at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

"Wheelchair tennis is a really exciting sport to watch and hopefully some of the crowd from today will come along and support us against the world's top players in July when we play at the British Open in Nottingham," said British No.3 Phillipson.

"We have our own version of the Davis Cup coming up with the World Team Cup in Turkey in May and it was an honour representing my country last year when the Junior Team won a bronze medal," added World Junior Masters champion Hewett.
