Portsmouth Tennis Centre set for official opening

A brand new indoor tennis centre in Portsmouth is set to be officially opened next month after opening its doors to the public in November.

Portsmouth Tennis Centre, which features four indoor and six outdoor courts, has been built thanks to a grant from the LTA and Tennis Foundation of £850,000. Portsmouth City Council have also provided funding with the aim of getting more people playing tennis more often across the city.

The Portsmouth Tennis Centre, which is run by Parkwood Leisure, will be officially opened by Greg Rusedski on Saturday 11th January 2014 when people will be able to come and try different types of tennis activity for free including mini tennis, cardio tennis, family play and coaching for adults and juniors.

The Centre will provide opportunities for all ages and abilities including mini tennis, adult coaching, and competitive programmes, as well as being part of the city-wide disability network. The Centre operates on a pay and play basis, with local people being able to book courts online as well as take part in coaching.

Community Tennis Projects and CITCs Director, Mike Bain, said: "Tennis in Portsmouth is thriving at the moment and the new centre will support further growth in the north of the city. The LTA and Tennis Foundation are delighted to support this project, which is a great example of a city council, leisure provider and national governing body working together in partnership."

Portsmouth is one of eight in a series of community based pilot programmes across England, Scotland and Wales to help identify what works best in growing the game, particularly in urban areas, and how to develop a sustainable model at a local level.
