British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) are pleased to confirm the athletes selected to represent Great Britain in Tennis at the 2013 World University Games (WUGs) in Kazan, Russia, taking place next month.
Three British student athletes studying at university in the United States join three who study in the UK to make up the Great Britain tennis team that will compete in this year's World University Games.
In 2011 at the summer Universiade in Shenzhen the best tennis performance came from Daniel Cochrane and his men's double partner Corrie as they reached the quarter final stage. Daniel returns to represent Great Britain in WUGs competition this summer, hoping to do even better this time around. Since his WUGs debut in 2011 Cochrane has won the All-American Doubles championships, the second major win in Auburn tennis history, and is currently ranked 1st in the ITA national doubles rankings.
Daniel Cochrane from Auburn University is joined by Chris Simpson of Louisiana State and Daneika Borthwick studying at Florida State, Loughborough University's Scott Whitbread and Amanda Elliott, with Anna Fitzpatrick from the University of East London completing the team, which is being funded by Great Britain's leading tennis charity, the Tennis Foundation.
The athlete's journey continued at the Great Britain team kitting out experience where they were able to get their hands on the bespoke kit, designed by Kukri, for the first time.
The World University Games, taking place in 2013 in Kazan during the 6th – 17th July, is the second largest multisport event in the world, after the Olympic Games, with more than 13,000 participants representing 170 countries expected at this year's Games in Kazan, Russia. A Great Britain delegation of 175 will take part with athletes competing in Artistic Gymnastics, Badminton, Fencing, Football, Judo, Rugby 7's, Shooting, Swimming and Tennis.
