The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and the Tennis Foundation welcomes the Prime Minister's announcement today to invest £150 million into primary schools across the country for school sport.
The investment will see every state primary school in England getting funding over the next two years to spend specifically on improving the quality and quantity of physical education and sport. In addition Ofsted inspectors will now pay greater attention to physical education and sport when they visit schools.
Alongside the Government investment, Sport England will invest £1.5 million a year of National Lottery funding through County Sport Partnerships to help primary schools link up with sports locally.
"We welcome today's announcement by the Prime Minister and believe it will improve the provision of high quality physical education and school sport in primary schools," said Roger Draper, Chief Executive of the LTA.
"British tennis' own schools programme recognises the integral role teachers play in the development of physical literacy at a primary school age. The Aegon Schools Tennis programme, delivered by the Tennis Foundation, in partnership with the LTA, has now supported over 15,000 schools across Britain, the vast majority of which are primary. The programme works closely with teachers, and through training and the provision of resources and equipment, allows them to provide tennis lessons with confidence.
"We believe the commitments made by the Government today will support our work in primary schools by not only helping teachers offer more PE and school sport, but also aid the development of physical literacy at a primary school age, especially given the Government's plans to pilot a new scheme allowing teachers to train as PE primary specialists
"We are also encouraged by the desire to promote greater engagement between schools and local community clubs, and believe that will inspire children to make sport a part of their lives, an important legacy from the 2012 Games."
The announcement follows a successful evening for Schools Tennis after the Aegon Schools Tennis Programme last night won the 'Best Secondary Resource non-ICT' award at the British Educational Suppliers Association Education Resources Awards.
