Schools inspired by trip to Barclays ATP World Tour Finals

Over 500 school pupils will be inspired by the action at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals this week after being given the opportunity to attend the end of year spectacular in London.

Tickets were provided to schools that are part of the Tennis Foundation's Schools Tennis Membership scheme. All tickets were priced at a hugely discounted £5 with all proceeds going to support the Tennis Foundation's partnership with Greenhouse Charity.

And Park Lane Primary School were given an all-expenses paid trip to the event after winning a competition to put together a video to show what tennis means at their school.

Schools were invited to create a short video showcasing ways in which their pupils are engaging in tennis, not just by playing but in other ways across their curriculum that engages all pupils.

The judging panel looked for submissions that demonstrated innovation in teaching and learning and the promotion of a healthy and active lifestyle through tennis with a focus on enjoyment and respect between pupils.

Paul Williams, Schools Tennis Manager for the Tennis Foundation, said, "World Class events such as the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals can provide the inspiration for young people to get involved and stay involved in our sport. We're delighted that more than 70 schools will be attending this week and a special mention must go to Park Lane Primary School whose video demonstrates how schools can use tennis as a catalyst for learning across the whole school."

Debbie Stroud, teaching assistant at Park Lane Primary School, added, "The children were thoroughly inspired by their day at the tennis and I'm sure it will be a day they will never forget. On the way home they kept telling me they couldn't wait to get back on the tennis court playing themselves."

The competition builds on British tennis' Aegon Schools Tennis programme, which is delivered by the Tennis Foundation in partnership with the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA).

The programme aims to increase and improve tennis participation in schools, remove barriers by training teachers to deliver a fun, quality tennis experience in confined spaces, and create links to enable young people to continue playing in the community.

Since April 2009, Aegon Schools Tennis has supported 16,839 schools with free teacher training, resources and equipment.
