The British tennis team has been announced for the World Transplant Sport Games taking place in Argentina from 23-30 August.
The eight strong team will compete in both singles and doubles competitions, grouped by age, at the 20th Transplant Sport Games in Mar del Plata, Argentina.
The World Transplant Games is the most important international sports event to promote the consciousness about the importance of organ, tissues and cells donation. Also, they are a valuable opportunity for transplanted athletes to show a real, possible and healthy lifestyle, after receiving a transplant.
Christos Liaskos who will play in the men’s singles, men’s doubles, and mixed doubles said: “When I received my GB kit in the post and tried it on the first time it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Training has gone brilliantly the last few months and now I can’t wait to get the kit back on for real for the games in Argentina.”
Debbie Chuddy who is competing the women’s singles added: “I feel hugely privileged to be representing team GB in the World Transplant Games and having the opportunity to demonstrate how the wonderful gift of life has transformed our lives.”
Whilst Andrew Knox, who works for Transplant Sport and will be competing in the men’s singles and doubles said: “Having had three living related kidney transplants from family I feel like the luckiest man alive. I want to make my family and friends proud, demonstrate that life after transplants can be wonderful, especially when there's a little tennis thrown in!”
