Cotterill lifts Gauteng Open quad doubles title

Antony Cotterill claimed the 19th quad doubles title of his career as he partnered American David Wagner to win a tense Gauteng Open final.

Top seeds Cotterill and Wagner beat Itay Erenlib of Israel and Ymanitu Silva of Brazil 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-3  in Saturday’s decider.

Cotterill will now be joined in South Africa in the coming days by Jamie Burdekin and Andy Lapthorne ahead of the trio of Brits lining up for the quad singles and doubles at the SA Open, the second Super Series tournament of 2015, which begins on Tuesday.

Antony Cotterill’s reached the quad doubles final at the Gauteng Open, partnering American David Wagner. The top seeds beat South Africans Stephen Kekai and Danny Mohlamanye 6-0, 6-1 in their semi-final and will go on to play Itay Erenlib of Israel and Ymanitu Silva of Brazil in Saturday’s final.

However, Cotterill bowed out of the quad singles in the semi-finals. The fourth seed slipped to a 6-0, 6-3 loss to South Africa’s world No. 4 and second seed Lucas Sithole.

Antony Cotterill moved into the quad singles semi-finals on the second day of play in Benoni when coming through a tough quarter-final against Israel’s Itay Erenlib 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-3.

Cotterill will go on to play South African second seed and world No. 4 Lucas Sithole, the 2014 Gauteng Open runner-up, in the semi-finals.

Later in the day Cotterill and David Wagner of the USA, top seeds for the quad doubles, beat French duo Thomas Huguenin and Sebastien Jance 6-0, 6-1 in their opening match to earn another semi-final against South Africans Stephen Kekai and Danny Mohlamanye.

Back-to-back tournaments in South Africa for Britain’s leading quad players started well for Antony Cotterill as the world No. 12 beat Stephane Erismann of France 7-5, 6-1 to reach the quad singles quarter-finals at the Gauteng Open.

Fourth seed Cotterill will play Itay Erenlib of Israel for a place in the semi-finals.

Cotterill is the only Brit contesting this week’s ITF 1 Series event ahead of next week’s ASCA SA Open, the second Super Series tournament of the year, where Andy Lapthorne and Jamie Burdekin will also be among the field for the quad singles and doubles.
