Cotterill and Lapthorne win South Africa Open doubles

18/04/15

Antony Cotterill and Andy Lapthorne claimed their second Super Series quad doubles title together at the South Africa Open after beating Jamie Burdekin and the USA's David Wagner 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.

With three Brits in the final, Cotterill and Lapthorne resumed the quad doubles decider at 5-1 up in the second set and duly claimed the game they needed to force the third set. The second seeds maintained the momentum to beat the top seeds and add to their Open de France quad doubles title in June 2014.

The victory completed a memorable two weeks in South Africa for Cotterill, who also won the quad doubles at the ITF 1 Series Gauteng Open partnering Wagner. Meanwhile, it was a third doubles title of 2015 for Lapthorne after winning the Australian Open quad doubles with Wagner and the Cajun Classic quad doubles with Burdekin.

At least one British player will lift a Super Series title in Johannesburg after Antony Cotterill and Andy Lapthorne completed their unfinished quad doubles semi-final with victory over Itay Erenlib and Ymanitu Silva.

Second seeds Cotterill and Lapthorne then took to the court for the final against Jamie Burdekin and David Wagner. With three Brits in the decider, the Anglo-American partnership of Burdekin and Wagner rook the opening set 6-4, but Cotterill and Lapthorne battled back to lead the second set 5-1 before bad light caused play to be suspended for the day. The final resumes on Saturday.

Earlier in the day Lapthorne bowed out of the quad singles to home favourite and world No. 4 Lucas Sithole, who won their semi-final 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Lapthorne beat Antony Cotterill 6-4, 6-3 in an entertaining singles quarter-final between the two Brits, with second seed Lapthorne now set to play third seed and home favourite Lucas Sithole for a place in the final as the world No. 3 attempts to regain the SA Open title he won in 2013, when he beat Sithole in the final.

While Burdekin bowed out of the quad singles at the semi-final stage after slipping to a 6-1, 6-4 loss to Brazil’s Ymanitu Silva, there was better fortune later in the day as top seeds Burdekin and David Wagner beat Sweden’s Anders Hard and Sithole 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 to reach the quad doubles final.

Second seeds Cotterill and Lapthorne complete their quad doubles semi-final against Silva and Itay Erenlib of Israel on Friday’s fourth day of play as they bid to make it three Brits through to the final.

After Antony Cotterill’s quad doubles victory at the ITF 1 Series Gauteng Open, a trio of Brits line up for the South Africa Open, the second Super Series tournament of the year, with Cotterill joined in Johannesburg by Andy Lapthorne and Jamie Burdekin.

With Cotterill returning to the top 10 in the quad singles world rankings this week, all three Brits go into the South Africa Open in seeded positions and have been awarded first round byes. World No. 3 Lapthorne is the second seed and will play one of two South African players, Stephen Kekai or Danny Mohlamanye, for a place in the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, world No. 5 and fourth seed Burdekin will meet Frenchman Thomas Huguenin in the last 16, with world No. 10 and sixth seed Cotterill also set to meet French opposition after being drawn against Virgil Silva.

While Cotterill and Lapthorne could meet in the quad singles quarter-finals, they will also pair up for the quad doubles as they bid to go one better than finishing runners-up in South Africa in 2014 before winning their first Super Series doubles title together at last season’s BNP Paribas Open de France. Burdekin will partner American David Wagner in the quad doubles as the 2014 British Open champions also bid for their second Super Series title together.
