Dermot was diagnosed with Perthes Disease, which affects his mobility, in early childhood and after starting to use a wheelchair he took up wheelchair tennis aged 8. He has gone on to become one of Britain’s brightest young players and has represented his country on a number of occasions. He helped Great Britain to fourth place in the junior event at the World Team Cup, in both Nottingham in 2009 and in Pretoria, South Africa, in 2011, having missed the 2010 event due to school exams. Dermot has also represented Great Britain in the Cruyff Foundation Junior Masters in France and the ITF European Junior Wheelchair Tennis Camp.

In July 2011 he won the men’s second draw doubles at the British Open, where he was also a finalist in the boys’ singles, and started 2012, his last year as a junior, by reaching his highest junior boys’ singles world ranking of No. 6.

In a season when his tournament activity was limited to six tournaments due to injury and education commitments he also won the men’s consolation singles at the North West challenge, and reached the quarter-finals of the German Open before earning a place in the men’s doubles semi-finals at the Nottingham Indoor.

Dermot improved his men's singles world ranking by more than 120 places last season after reaching ITF 3 Series singles semi-finals at the North West Challenge in Britain and the Biel-Bienne Indoors in Switzerland and also finishing runner-up at the Martigny Indoor In Switzerland in June 2013. He was also runner-up in the men's doubles at all three tournaments. Dermot reached the men's singles final and won his first ever men's main draw doubles title at the Memorial Jens Vanherck in Antwerp in August before reaching the quarter-finals of the Ath Open. He moved into September by ending three successive tournaments in Belgium with victory in the men's doubles at the ITF 3 Series Belgium 25 in Lebbeke, partnering fellow Brit Alfie Hewett. He was also a singles semi-finalist in Lebbeke. By the end of September he had improved his career best men's singles ranking to No. 52 and his career best men's doubles ranking to No. 56.

Dermot made his 2014 seasonal debut at July’s British Open, where he reached the mixed doubles final, and went on to play back-to-back tournaments in Belgium in August, winning the men’s consolation singles and reaching the men’s doubles final at the Flanders 25. He also reached the men's doubles final at the Wrexham ITF Futures and ended 2014 on a high after winning the men's second draw singles at the Prague Cup Czech Indoor.

Dermot won his first senior men's singles main draw title at the the ITF Futures Series Sheffield Wheelchair Tennis Tournament in April 2015.
