Maia Lumsden has won the AEGON Junior Player of the Month award for January.
The 14 year-old from Glasgow is one of the up and coming juniors in British Tennis.
Most recently Maia claimed the AEGON Junior International title in Bolton by overcoming Alicia Black of the USA 7-5, 6-1 in the final. On her way to the success, Lumsden beat No.3 seed, Theo Gravouil 6-4, 6-1 and also came through 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-3 in a two hour 43 minute battle against Emma Higuchi of the United States.
In the same competition, Lumsden was also in the girl’s doubles final with fellow Briton Jazzi Plews against Alicia Black & Nicole Frenkel (USA). They came runners up after narrowly missing out 6-2, 5-7, 10-6.
Maia continued her run of form by progressing into the singles semi-finals in Tarbes. As the 16th seed, she beat the top seed in round three and American Raquel Pedraza 6-3, 6-0 in the quarter-finals. She then met another American; fourth seed Alicia Black who defeated her 6-1, 6-1.
Earlier in 2011 Lumsden was also in action at the AEGON Clay Court Championships where she claimed the girl’s singles title by defeating Jasmine Amber Asghar 6-4, 6-2.
