Tommy Robredo has defeated James Ward 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 in the men's singles at the French Open in Paris.
Ward, who is the first British man to qualify for the French Open since John Lloyd in 1973, started strongly to take the first set 6-4 in 49 minutes before a rain delayed called a halt to play.
When play resumed it was No.17 seed Robredo who took control and eventually the match in four sets, despite some defiant play from the British Davis Cup star.
On Tuesday British men's No.1 Andy Murray begins his campaign against Andrey Golubev (KAZ) and British women's No.2 Heather Watson takes on Barbora Zahlavova Strycova.
