British tennis No.1 Laura Robson to play the Aegon Classic

Teenage British No.1, Laura Robson, will join Heather Watson and former Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli at this year’s Aegon Classic tennis tournament staged on the historic grass courts of the Edgbaston Priory Club in Birmingham.

Confirming her participation at the Aegon Classic, Laura said: “I always enjoy the grass court season and I am excited to return to the Aegon Classic in Birmingham and to play in front of a home crowd. It’s fantastic preparation ahead of Wimbledon.”

Robson won her first ever junior grand slam at The Championships, Wimbledon as a 14 year old and had a breakthrough season in 2012 cracking the world’s Top 100 for the first time, winning a silver medal at the 2012 Olympics, then upsetting former Grand Slam champions Kim Clijsters and Li Na en route to the last 16 of the US Open, finishing just outside the Top 50.  This year Robson defeated former Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova at the Australian Open, and recently became British No. 1 for the first time when she broke into the world’s Top 40. 

Lawrence Robertson, Commercial Director for the LTA, said: “It’s fantastic news for the tournament that we now have our two top British players confirmed to play at the event. Laura has risen through the ranks of tennis this past year and we’re all excited to get the chance to watch her back on British soil again.”

Staged in the heart of Birmingham, the Aegon Classic is one the of the UK’s major warm-up tournaments ahead of The Championships, Wimbledon. Offering the chance to see some of the world’s top international female tennis players, this prestigious tournament is returning to Birmingham’s Edgbaston Priory Club for the 32nd time from the 9th to the 16th June.  Former winners of the event include Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova, Pam Shriver, Maria Sharapova, Jelena Jankovic and Li Na.

Tickets are now on sale and are available from www.aegonclassic.co.uk/tickets. Prices start from just £10 on Monday 10 June and go up to £30 on finals day.
