Sixteen-year-old Donna Vekic will be bidding for her first WTA Tour title when she takes on 30-year-old Daniela Hantuchova in Sunday’s Aegon Classic final.

Vekic is currently the youngest player ranked in top 350 of the WTA Rankings. If she wins the title on Sunday she would be the youngest champion in the tournament’s history.

Vekic beat former finalist Magdalena Rybarikova 7-6(5), 1-6, 6-3 in Saturday’s semi-finals and afterwards said she was thrilled to be playing in what will be her second career WTA Final. Vekic was runner-up to Irina-Camelia Beguin Tashkent in September last year and is hoping to go one better in Birmingham.

“I am just going to enjoy every second, if I win that’s great but I have lots more years to play and lots more titles to win,” said Vekic. “The support here has been amazing. They helped me a lot today. The crowd was really, really good. I think they wanted me to win and I’m happy that I made them happy. So hopefully they will support me tomorrow as well.”

Hantuchova had to overcome American qualifier Alison Riske, ranked 167 in the world, 5-7 6-1, 6-4 in their semi-final to earn a spot in what will be her second Aegon Classic final after she finished runner-up to Sabine Lisicki in 2011.

“I thought she played really well she is a difficult player,” said Hantuchova. “I was a little bit unlucky in the first set but I am really happy that I turned it around. Tomorrow is another day. I have to give it my best.”

It was a busy day for Riske, who began the day by wrapping up a quarter-final win over former Aegon Classic champion (and Wimbledon semi-finalist) Sabine Lisicki. The match was held up by bad light on Friday evening and resumed on Saturday at 7-6(2) 2-6, 2-2. On the restart, Riske wrapped up the third set 6-4 to achieve the biggest win of her career over the World No.34. Riske, who won two matches in qualifying and five overall at this year’s  Aegon Classic, was a semi-finalist here in 2010 and a quarter-finalist in 2011.

Sunday’s singles final starts at 1pm.
