Donna Vekic storms past Sorana Cirstea at Aegon Classic

Teenager Donna Vekic stormed past Sorana Cirstea of Romania 6-2, 6-1 on Friday for a spot in the Aegon Classic semi-finals, her first on British soil.

The 16 year-old from Croatia, who is striving to win her first WTA title, dominated the Cirstea second serve throughout, winning 81% of points in a rain interrupted match.

“It was tough going out on the court a few times and then off again” said Vekic afterwards. “You need to stay warm, focused all the time and be ready from the get go, which wasn’t easy but I think I did a pretty good job today.”

“I like to attack during matches and during the points and I like to be in control of the points and I think that really suits the grass court.”

Magdalena Rybarikova cruised into the final for with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over American Madison Keys.

“It’s been pretty tiring today; we’ve had the covers on and off five or six times. A couple of times we didn’t get play started after we set things up. So it’s been a bit frustrating but good as well.”
