Organisers at the Aegon Classic have on Tuesday announced that tickets for the celebratory mixed-doubles tennis match on Sunday 9th June at the Edgbaston Priory Club, have sold-out.

The tournament which marks the grand opening of the Edgbaston Priory Club’s new centre court has smashed all previous records, with 2,000 tickets for the prestigious one-off game snapped up in just over four weeks.

The mystery fourth player has now been confirmed as world No.30 Sorana Cirstea. She will play with Greg Rusedski against Tim Henman and British No.2 Heather Watson.

They will be the first to play on the new sunken centre court before the UK’s most prestigious all-female tennis tournament, the Aegon Classic, gets into full swing from Monday 10th to Sunday 16th June.

Patrick Hughesman, Tournament Director of the Aegon Classic said: “We are delighted with the buzz and attention this special exhibition tennis match has sparked. Tickets have proved so popular; the match has smashed all previous sales records.

“The opening of centre court marks the completion of a project to provide world-class tournament facilities for female tennis players ahead of Wimbledon. We also hope it will increase participation in tennis both at the Club and in the local Birmingham community.

“We are delighted that Tim and Greg, alongside Heather Watson and Sorana Cirstea, will be some of the first players to grace our centre court.  It promises to be the start of a great week of world class tennis in Birmingham. Sales for the Aegon Classic are also doing really well and so we would urge people to book early to avoid disappointment.”

The new centre court is part of a £5 million investment by the LTA into the Edgbaston Priory Club to provide a world class tournament venue for the players. The new facilities also include a six court indoor tennis centre and four new outside grass courts.

Offering a chance to see first rate tennis, the Aegon Classic is one the of the UK’s major warm-up tournaments ahead of The Championships, Wimbledon, returning to Birmingham’s Edgbaston Priory Club for the 32nd year.
