Wildcards
Britain’s Katy Dunne has made it through to round two of qualifiers at the Aegon Classic.
She is the only British wildcard to come through her first round match, beating France’s Alize Lim 6(4)-7, 6-2, 6-4.
Dunne, who turned things around after losing the first set said: “Grass is becoming my favourite surface. It’s nice to have the crowd behind me.”
After her win the nineteen year-old tweeted: “OMG WOOOOO!!!”
But it wasn’t to be for fellow Britons Manisha Foster, Tara Moore, Emily Webley-Smith and Harriet Dart.
After losing to World No.101, Timea Babos 6-3, 6-2, Dart said: “It’s my first WTA event so it was always going to be difficult. I don’t feel like I played my best tennis, but I gave it a go and sometimes you win, sometimes you learn and today I learnt.”
Back in Birmingham
Twenty-one year old Babos, who faces Katy Dunne in the next round, was still playing in French Open three days ago. She said the move to grass is difficult, but one she enjoys, especially at this tournament: “I have great memories here in Birmingham as I won my first WTA title here even though it was in doubles.”
Shelby Rogers, who beat Tara Moore 6-4, 6-4 added: “I absolutely love it here. The courts are impeccable. This year they redid everything, so it’s nice to be back.”
