Job Dunne

Briton Katy Dunne has reached the main draw of the Aegon Classic after beating the No.2 qualifying seed, Timea Babos 6-2, 7-6(4).

Dunne came back from 4-0 down in the second set to claim a victory in what she calls her biggest win yet: “I have no idea how I did that. I just stayed calm, [Babos] put a few sloppy errors in, there were a couple of returns that she missed and I just took advantage and managed to get the break when she was serving for it.”

To celebrate the nineteen year-old says she will be indulging in a scone, but has not lost focus on what is to come: “I am going to recover and make sure I am in the best shape and ready to battle pretty hard on Tuesday.”

She also tweeted to her growing fan base: “Pretty happy right now, cannot express how excited i am to have qualified for my first wta and be playing my 1st roung either mon or tues!!”

British No.2 Heather Watson added: “I am very happy for Katy Dunne. I did an off season training camp with her a few years ago and actually out of all of them I have I enjoyed doing it with her most, because she worked so hard and had a great attitude.”

Ready for a fight

Top seed, Ana Ivanovic has been preparing for the start of the main draw of the tournament on the practice courts and at the Warwickshire Country Cricket Club with last year’s finalist Donna Vekic.

The Serbian said she is looking forward to Monday: “It’s been a while since I have been top seed and it’s exciting definitely, but there’s still a lot of hard work to be done and hopefully I can get a lot of matches this week.”

The World No.12 is welcoming the contest ahead: “The draw is a really strong field, this year the tournament has been upgraded, so there is a lot of good players in the field, but it’s exciting and I love challenges.”

Team USA

Going into the tournament third seed, Sloane Stephens said: “I am just going to play my game, obviously grass is tricky and so it’s tricky for everyone playing. It’s definitely something you really got to work on and be really focused.”

Stephens is one of nine Americans competing in the main draw of the Classic this year, alongside Irina Falconi who qualified today beating Japan’s Shuko Aoyama 6-2, 6-2.

After her win Falconi commented: “It’s a great tournament to play before Wimbledon.”
