Wednesday at Eastbourne saw Caroline Wozniacki and Elena Vesnina end the runs of British hopefuls Laura Robson and Heather Watson.
British No.1, Robson, saw her Aegon International campaign ended in the second round by Denmanrk's Wozniacki. In a tight match Robson was broken in the ninth game of both sets to lose 6-4, 6-4.
Heather Watson bravely fought back on Court One but was denied by the Russian Vesnina, who triumphed 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.
Earlier, in a back and forth match on Centre Court Yanina Wickmayer defeated fourth seed Petra Kvitova 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. After a tight first two sets, it came down to who could hold their serve in the third, as returns dominated. Eventually Wickmayer found a way to hold and will face Maria Kirilenko in the next round.
On Court One Czech starlet Lucie Safarova defeated the experienced Samantha Stosur 7-6(5), 6-3. Whilst it was a case of so near yet so far for Elena Baltacha who succumbed to sixth seed Maria Kirilenko 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Whilst in the men’s event Milos Raonic was elimanted in his first match, beaten by Ivan Dodig 6-2, 7-6(7). The highest seed left in the men's event is Gilles Simon after the Frenchman saw off a spirited display by 18 year old Kyle Edmund to claim a 7-6(5), 7-6(3) victory.
