British No.3 Johanna Konta took time out from training for the Aegon International to catch the iconic Dotto train along Eastbourne's seafront on Saturday.
A main draw wildcard recipient in Eastbourne, Konta joins 10 of the world's top 15 players including top seed Agnieszka Radwanska and No.2 seed Na Li in finalising her preparations for Wimbledon at Devonshire Park, where she has been drawn to play world No.44 Su-Wei Hsieh in the first round.
“The Aegon International is very important because we have such a short grass court season, so every match you can get under your belt on grass is extremely important,” said world No.140 Konta, who reached the second round of qualifying at Eastbourne in 2012 and is playing in the main draw of her hometown event for the first time.
“As tennis players, the number of weeks we spend at home is very limited so to play a tournament in my home town is a great feeling, it's very special,” said Konta. “When there is a good crowd out there you can feed off their energy, so it's a really good feeling to play in front of Eastbourne tennis fans.”
A bumper crowd is expected at Devonshire Park this year with the tournament staging a Family Day on Saturday June 15, with free entry to the grounds and unreserved seating on Centre Court and Court One.
Legends Day on Sunday June 16 will feature a quartet of tennis greats competing in a Father’s Day tussle, former British No.1 Greg Rusedski facing off against Mark Philippoussis in singles before teaming up with former world No.1 Lindsay Davenport and two-time Wimbledon doubles champion Rennae Stubbs in a mixed doubles match.
