Top 10 WTA player Sara Errani from Italy will look to continue her singles breakthrough as the first of many big names to enter the Aegon International at Eastbourne.
The 25-year-old will take to the Devonshire Park courts for the tournament, which takes place from June 15-22, as she prepares herself for The Championships, Wimbledon – the only Slam she is yet to win a title.
Last year the Bologna native recorded her best ever results in all four Grand Slams including a runner-up finish at the French Open and a semi-final appearance at the US Open– propelling her to a career-high ranking of No.6 in the world last October.
In doubles, Errani with Roberta Vinci have won three of the last four majors: the French, US and Australian Open’s making them the best doubles players in the world as joint world No. 1’s on the WTA doubles rankings.
Errani said: “This will be my first time playing at Eastbourne and I am really looking forward to playing in front of passionate fans at what I’m told is a beautiful venue.
“It is always nice to play in the UK and the courts at Eastbourne are renowned for being world class so I hope I can play really well and try to go as far as possible in the competition.
“It will be a pleasure to play in a competition which has had so many great winners in the past and maybe I can add my name to that list.”
Last year saw five of the top ten ranked female players competing at the Aegon International with Tamira Paszek scooping the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) title and Andy Roddick winning the men’s tournament.
A bumper crowd is expected again at Devonshire Park this year – particularly on the opening day of the tournament, Saturday 15 June, after it was announced that entry to the grounds will be free. Centre Court and Court One will also have unreserved seating, making it the ideal time to see great tennis served daily.
Sunday June 16 will feature a host of legends competing in a Father’s Day tussle as former British No.1 Greg Rusedski faces off with Mark Philippoussis before they team up with former world No.1 Lindsay Davenport and two-time Wimbledon Doubles Champion Rennae Stubbs in a mixed doubles match.
