Aegon International: Day 1

Share

Former champion falls

In the first match on center court, unseeded Frenchman Jeremy Chardy beat two time former champion Ivo Karlovic in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. The big-serving Croatian's first serve saw him fire down fourteen aces, but when that failed he was only able to win 21% of his second serve points. Chardy will be looking to improve on his first appearance at the International in 2012, where he lost in the second round to Andy Roddick.

Number One seed crashes out

World no. 4 and no. 1 seed Agnieszka Radwanksa lost a close match against the unseeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(4). The Russian Pavlyuchenkova impressed with her strong baseline game, just edging the deciding set for the first notable upset of the tournament.

Brits lose in first round

The world no. 90 Tobias Kamke, who had come through qualifying this weekend, beat the British no. 2 Dan Evans 6-2, 6-3, taking an impressive 80% of his first serve points and converting three of his sixth break point opportunities. Later on in the day, youngster Kyle Edmunds fell to Sam Querrey 7-6(5), 6-3, the American exacting some revenge for the Davis Cup loss earlier in the year to Edmund's Davis Cup teammate James Ward.

Elsewhere on Day One

Day one also saw Elena Vesnina, the 2013 champion, see off Shuai Peng 6-3, 6-4 to start her 2014 campaign. Fifth seed Angelique Kerber is also through after beating American Alison Riske in the first match on court one 7-6(6), 6-4.

Tomorrow's Play

Tuesday's schedule sees second seed Petra Kvitova look to avoid a similar fate to the no. 1 seed Radwanksa when she takes on Czech Lucie Safarova on center court. Brit James Ward gets a chance to play the dead rubber from the Great Britain vs USA tie when he takes on American Donald Young.
