British ladies through in style
Eastbourne local Johanna Konta eased through to the second round following a comfortable 6-3, 6-2 win over Belinda Bencic. Swiss Bencic, who had earnt her place in the first round after coming through qualifying, struggled with her serve, only winning 26% of her second serve points compared to Konta's impressive 63%. Konta will play Camila Giorgi in the next round, and holds a 1-0 head to head record against the Italian.
In the last match of the day, new British no. 1 Heather Watson came back from a set down to win 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 against world no. 37 Tsvetana Pironkova in a 2 hour battle in the fading light. Watson takes on Italian Flavia Pennetta in the second round, with the two having never met on the tour before.
Mixed fortunes for British doubles
The brothers pairing of Neal and Ken Skupski took on Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Chris Guccione, winning 6-4, 7-6(1) and saving 8 break points to advance to the next round. Ross Hutchins and Colin Fleming resumed their doubles partnership with some flair, knocking out fourth seeds Julian Knowle and Marcelo Melo 6-4, 6-4.
Joss Rae and Anna Smith had a tough matchup against the pairing of Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik. Rae and Smith lost a close match 2-6, 6-4, 4-10, fighting back superbly in the second before just losing out.

Female seeds continue to fall
Following on from Monday's upset, which saw no. 1 seed Agnieszka Radwanksa knocked out, Tuesday continued to deliver surprises, the fourth seed and world no. 8 Victoria Azarenka falling to Camila Giorgi 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Despite the result, it was a positive return to action for Azarenka, having not played since Indian Wells earlier this year.
Over on court one, third seed Jelena Jankovic lost to American Madison Keys 6-3, 6-3, with Keys playing 2013 champion Elena Vesnina in the next round.
Elsewhere
British no. 3 James Ward fell to an improving Donald Young in their first round matchup as he lost out to the American 6-3, 6-2, Young's consistent first serve proving too much for Ward.
