Former Wimbledon finalist Agnieszka Radwanska has joined the list of top players who will be batting for honours, on the grass, at the Aegon International, in Eastbourne from 14th- 21st June. Radwanska who is currently ranked No.3 in the world, will join a host stars for the prestigious tournament at Devonshire Park, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this summer.
The Polish player has good memories of Eastbourne, which has seen winners such as Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Virginia Wade, Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters. In 2008 she beat Nadia Petrova in three sets, to take the title at Devonshire Park, before making the quarter finals at Wimbledon, which took her to number 10 in the world. She also became the first Polish player ever to make the top 10 on the WTA Tour.
Since then she has produced some excellent performances on grass. She was runner up at Wimbledon to Serena Williams in 2012, in her first Grand Slam final, and made the semi-finals at the All England Club again last year.
Radwanska had a great start to 2014 reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open in January, and is looking for a strong performance at the Aegon International to kick off her grass-court season in the UK.
Radwanska said: “I'm really looking forward to playing at the Aegon International in Eastbourne again this year. Winning at Devonshire Park in 2008 was a very special moment for me, so it’s fantastic to be back for the 40th anniversary of this great tournament.”
David Macmillan, Chief Marketing Officer at Aegon said: “It’s great to have Agnieszka Radwańska, a former Wimbledon finalist and current world number 3, confirm she’ll be playing at this year’s Aegon International. With other top players such as Petra Kvitova already confirmed, the tournament line-up looks strong and spectators should see some great contests.”
On Sunday 15th June at the Aegon International, British Tennis will be hosting ‘Rally for Bally’ in memory of former British number one Elena Baltacha who lost her battle against liver cancer earlier this month. An all-star line-up in Eastbourne will see Heather Watson, Greg Rusedski, Petra Kvitova and Jonny Marray join forces to play a mixed doubles exhibition match to raise money for the Elena Baltacha Academy of Tennis, as well as the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. Mixed doubles matches will also take place on the same day at the Aegon Championships at The Queen’s Club, and at the Aegon Classic in Birmingham.
