After winning in Leeds earlier in the year in the Summer Series tournaments, Shahzad Afzal claimed his second Tennis Foundation Development Series victory of 2013 at the Kirbys Solicitors Ilkley Wheelchair Tennis Tournament, the third of the scheduled Winter Series tournaments.
Afzal won all three of his singles matches in straight sets, beating both Martin Seed and Helen Bond 4-0, 4-0, while coming through a much tougher contest against Jeff Gosling 5-3, 4-1.
Bond, the winner of the women's event in the Tennis Foundation Development Series in 2012, finished runner-up in the singles on the indoor courts at Ilkley Lawn Tennis Club after winning two of her three matches. Bond beat Seed 4-2, 4-2 and, like Afzal, also secured a 5-3, 4-1 win over Gosling, who took third place in the round-robin event after he defeated Seed 4-0, 4-2.
Afzal also added the doubles title after partnering seed to victory. The duo clinched a first set tie-break against Bond and Gosling before a more dominant second set performance saw them through to a 5-4(5), 4-1 victory.
