Alfie Hewett

29/08/14

Alfie Hewett made it three titles in two weekes on the final day in Madrid as he retained his men's singles titles with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Spain's Martin de la Puente.

The 16-year-old world No. 1 ranked junior added the singles title to the doubles title he won on the penultimate day of play, partnering Spain's Daniel Caverzaschi, retaining both the titles he won at the ITF 3 Series event in 2013.

Hewett's success in Madrid follows his men's doubles title and men's singles runners-up berth at the Slovakia Open.

Alfie Hewett moved to within a match of what would be a successful men’s singles title defence in Madrid after beating Spaniard Roberto Chamizo 7-5, 6-3 in the semi-finals, while also winning the men’s doubles title for the second successive year after partnering Daniel Caverzaschi to victory.

After starting his singles title defence against Felix Garcia, top seed Hewett will meet Martin de la Puente, the other half of Spain’s World’s Team Cup junior team, in Sunday’s final. Garcia and de la Puente were both on opposite sides of the net to Hewett in the junior final at the 2013 World Team Cup in Turkey, when Great Britain beat Spain.

Hewett and Caverzaschi, the tops seeds, defeated Moroccan fourth seeds Ayoub Ettali and Boukartacha Lhaj 6-3, 6-4 in the doubles semi-finals and went on to beat Chamizo and his fellow Spaniard Ruben Perez, the third seeds 6-4, 6-3 to seal the title.

Alfie Hewett made a confident start in Madrid as he began his bid to defend one of the five ITF 3 Series men’s singles titles he won in 2013.

Top seed Hewett swept past Spain’s Felix Garcia, one of the opponents also on the other side of the net to Hewett in the junior final at the 2013 World Team Cup in Turkey, when Great Britain beat Spain. Hewett will play. The world No. 1 junior and British men’s No. 4 followed his 6-1, 6-1 win over Garcia with a 6-1, 6-4 quarter-final victory over Dutchman Rody de Bie.

Hewett faces his second Spanish opponent in three days in the semi-finals when he takes on Roberto Chamizo.

The Brit and Spain’s Daniel Caverzaschi are top seeds for the men’s doubles and began the event by defeating Italy’s Luca Arca and Alberto Corradi 6-1, 6-4. They face Moroccan fourth seeds Ayoub Ettali and Boukartacha Lhaj in the semi-finals.
